About Us

Located in Chisholm, Minnesota, the Minnesota Discovery Center is a nonprofit museum, research center, and recreational park that brings the story of the Iron Range to life - past, present, and future. Once known as Ironworld, the Center was established in the late 1970s to celebrate the diverse cultures that shaped the region during the iron mining boom of the early 20th century.
Today, MDC spans 660 acres and features award-winning exhibits, a state-of-the-art museum, an extensive research library and archives, and engaging programs and events that honor the land, the mines, the people, and their work. Visitors can take trolley tours to a historic mine site, explore Heritage Park and its historic dwellings, or enjoy concerts and community events at the outdoor amphitheater.
From folk arts demonstrations to traveling exhibits and family-friendly festivals, the Minnesota Discovery Center continues to educate, entertain, and inspire - preserving the rich history and enduring spirit of Minnesota’s Iron Range.
